Eleusis

Classical

Eleusis was the chief rival city to Athens in Attica. Eleusis lost its independence to Erechtheus of Athens. Eleusis was a centre of a cult to Demeter known as the Eleusinian mysteries, established by Celeüs and his family. See also the Mother Goddesses for more about Demeter and Persephone.
